Types of Child Care Facilities

Here’s a quick overview of the types of child care programs in Kentucky.

Licensed Type 1


Provides care for 4 or more children in a non-residential setting, or 13 or more children in a residential setting.


Licensed Type II

Provides care in the provider’s primary residence for 7 to 12 children, including children related to the licensee.

Certified Family Child Care


Care in the caregiver’s own home for up to 6 unrelated children and up to 4 related children, with a maximum total of 10 children at any time.

Registered Relative Provider


Care provided by a family member in their own home or the child’s home. May care for no more than 6 children related to the caregiver, or no more than 8 children total including their own.

Non-Regulated Child Care


Providers caring for 3 or fewer children not related to them are not regulated by the Division of Regulated Child Care. Providers caring for more than 3 unrelated children must be certified or licensed unless exempt.
